BURNING MAN TOWER / BLACK ROCK DESERT, NEVADA
CLIENT: Housing Consortium for the Burning Man
PROGRAM: Multi-human housing (temporary)
SIZE: 3,200 ft2
COST: $10,000
COMPLETION: August 2003
NOTES: Stack of ISO twenty-foot containers ten-high provides an instant housing tower for the crazy folks attending the Burning Man festival. No crane is required to stack them: they are joined together with J,P:A's proprietary PRO/con fittings in a horizontal position and then hoisted up vertically by a sundry team of attendees' vehicles. The ultimate arrangement creates a chevron pattern in plan, which allows each stack to provide lateral stability to the other. All levels are accessed with a switchback cargo-net-drape up the inside of the vee; cargo nets also provide decks on the opposite side at each level. Old sails and other traps provide sun screening.
